User Services Area Report Director: o Joyce K. Reynolds: Area Summary reported by Joyce K. Reynolds, Information Science Institute Six active working groups and one BOF were held in the User Services Area (USV) of the IETF in Dallas, Texas. The TRAINMAT and USERGLOS Working Group did not meet. Humanities and Arts WG (HARTS), chaired by Scott Stoner and Janet Max (Summary reported by Scott Stoner.) The HARTS WG opened their session with introductions of attendees. The agenda included a short review of the charter, and review of the draft outline of the HARTS FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions and Answers). The focus of the session then shifted to the HARTS survey proposal. Consensus was reached that a survey was not appropriate to develop at this point in time. This group will first rework the FAQ outline and produce an FAQ document. The survey will be put on the back burner until the WG members feel there is a need for one. Internet School Networking (ISN), chaired by Jennifer Sellers and Jodi Ito (Summary reported by Jodi Ito.) The ISN Working Group was convened at 1pm by Jodi Ito, co-chair. There were no changes to the published agenda so introductions were the first order of business. The revised ISN charter was reviewed and the one date change is detailed in the minutes of the meeting. Next the FYI 22 update was discussed and several attendees had some suggestions which are included in the minutes. The document will be submitted to the IESG soon for publication as an RFC. The ISN document repository will be moving to Merit and the new location and move details will be posted to the mailing list. The FYI document describing the repository will be done by Mar. 96. The directory of educational projects idea was re-visited and revitalized. Rough consensus was reached on the basic fields of the directory and the general scope of the project. After substantial discussion among the group, it was agreed that it would be a 3 month experimental project. The final status of the project would be reported back to ISN in June 96. Sepi Boroumand continued the discussion on her idea for a "how to create a help desk" paper. The attendees had many suggestions and comments and Sepi will continue the discussion on-line. ISN2 BOF, chaired by Jennifer Sellers and Jodi Ito (Summary reported by Jodi Ito.) The ISN2 BOF was convened at 7:30pm by co-chair Jodi Ito. After introductions, Joyce Reynolds gave a short overview of the IETF, User Services Area, and RFC/FYI document series. Attendees provided several suggestions to better publicize the works of the ISN and are detailed in the minutes. Next, a brief description of the document repository was given and the attendees were asked to review it and submit their comments and any additional documents to the list. Then, copies of the update to FYI 22 - FAQ for Schools were distributed and the attendees were asked to review it and submit their comments to the authors - Jennifer Sellers (sellers@lupine.nsi.nasa.gov) and Julie Robichaux (julie@bbnplanet.com). The question: "how can ISN help educators within the IETF framework?" was posed to the group. Several suggestions were made: support/advocate use of the Internet for business applications for schools like purchasing, student records/tracking, etc., print business case studies - cost-savings success stories, collect "success" and "real-life" stories and have them searchable. Under "Any Other Business", Sepi Boroumand introduced the idea of creating a document targeted for those interested in starting a help desk. Consensus around the room indicated a need for a document like this. An active discussion ensued trying to refine the audience and content of the document. After a lively discussion, the meeting was adjourned around 9:30pm. Network Training Materials (TRAINMAT), chaired by Jill Foster, Margaret Issacs, and Mark Prior. TRAINMAT did not meet at the Dallas IETF. Site Security Handbook WG (SSH), chaired by Barbara Fraser (Summary reported by Barbara Fraser.) The SSH working group met one time during this IETF. The entire meeting was spent reviewing the content of the current draft and we didn't have time to develop the outline for the users' document. It was decided that we would discuss the outline for the user's document on the list and Gary Malkin agreed to post a strawman in the near future. Barbara will submit the current draft to I-Ds next week (since we didn't make the deadline for this meeting), and writers will get new material to her by the end of January. Barbara will then create a new draft by the middle of February and submit it to the I-D repositories at that time. User Glossary (USERGLOS) chaired by Gary Malkin USERGLOS did not meet at the Dallas IETF. User Services Working Group (USWG) chaired by Joyce K. Reynolds (Summary reported by JKRey.) A report on IETF User Services Area activities was presented by Joyce Reynolds, which included USV Area Working Group Status and related USV Area I-Ds. Susan Calcari presented an InterNIC Scout Update. Tom Newell (new NIC Liaison) presented an InterNIC Report, including what's new at the InterNIC and new NIC information updates. Joyce presented a report on on related global liaison group activities and international conferences. This included the IESG and USV Area Presentations at the RIPE meeting plenary and the Tel-Ed Conference held in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. Discussion/Participation of USWG projects were next on the agenda. These included USV-WEB Updates and the NIC Locator. Also discussed was the continuation and update of the HTML files of FYI RFCs, and Italy's Butterfly Glossary.
